They did that with Shelby Lynne several years ago. Lynne had been putting out albums on country labels for years, had some modest success but a lot of critical acclaim, and then when she won Best New Artist for "I Am Shelby Lynne", she kicked off her acceptance speech with a comment about "I don't know how you can call me new after ten years in this business..."

I don't think $40 million over a year counts as rapid iteration by any stretch of the imagination.

It is interesting that you bring up the transition from print to digital being the focus of income.

Why doesn't the Times Company have print and digital competing against each other?

The assumption you're making here, though not as egregiously as some who have commented on it, is that this is the final step in their strategy, set in stone and never to change. It also completely misses the point that print is still NYT's primary source of revenue, and this program is structured to favor that relationship. For now, at least.

Rather than doinitrong, I think they're doing it right, launching a strategy that puts a value on their digital content, complements their print content, and positions them to make further adjustments in response to user behavior that won't require this first step to be an all or nothing success.

Isn't that exactly what everyone has said publishers need to do? Experiment, fail, rapid iterations, rinse, repear?

I'm coming to this years late, but as a result of searching the internet for an article just like this. Thanks for it! And some of the responses, the moralistic ones, are just what I have experiences in my writing seminar when a character used the word f--k as her first bit of dialogue. I was told unceremoniously to cut it out, she "would never say that." But I said, "Wait a minute. It's her sentence, her first impression on you. She does actually say that. That's her." But just got more one-liners like "it's just not done" or "it's just not her."

Well, to me saying that a girl in fiction cannot or should not swear (I should say it was all older men talking about a young female character) or that swearing has no real place in ficiton, or it's for the intellectually stunted, it's better cut out... is all moralising. And untrue. It's the equivalent, a female writer friend said to me, of saying "all women should be virgins on their wedding night." Some might believe that, but it doesn't make it a fact of life. Or a fact of fiction.

Some of the best stories and books out there have swearing and while I'm not claiming to be Hemmingway or anyone like that, it's a bit dull to tell new writers that it's just a no-no, when it really boils down to genre, the character, the integrity of the story (I mean if some characters do NOT cuss, it's just a joke) and what effects you are after.
