The news story caught my attention because of the blurb below the headline
Gray Alan Combs, Jr., 22, of no fixed address, allegedly threatened officers with a sword.
The inherent tragedy is obvious, a mentally unstable man had wandered into a situation and was armed with a sword. According to the article, the police responded with a mixture of less-than-lethal (beanbag rounds) and live ammunition, fatally wounding the young Mr. Combs.
There was also a false identification, a foot chase and amazingly no other injuries.
Were the world a more interesting place, the story wouldn’t have ended there. The story would have ended with, “However, the body of Combs, Jr was missing from the morgue the morning after the shooting. The recovered sword was also missing from the evidence locker. Police are currently researching the whereabouts of both.”
The world needs more immortals and less no-win reactions to the mentally unstable.
