For someone claiming to be the best, he didn't proofread his blog entry for typos and careless writing.

@Arlene

Thanks for your comment. I think your points are valid. It was my interpretation that Dave was not being serious when he made claims as being the best, however I know him on a personal level and am used to his unique sense of humor. That being said, I can totally understand how it could be interpreted literally and I'm actually not surprised that's what happened.

Dave has since added some more to his apology and I encourage you to take a look. Also, our company's president has written a response that I also encourage you to read when you get a chance.

Thanks again for your input. I hope I was able to clear the air, if only a little bit.

I'm in agreement with you there, Alrene. The original blog post was taken down and replaced with a half apology ( http://bit.ly/c95LL ). I think what bothers me the most, and this is stemming from my background as a journalist, was the lack of editorial balance.

A few thoughts:

1) Saying you're "the best" at something is better left to let others to do on your behalf. Still, if you're going to blow your own horn, better to cite a source (preferably, a respected industry group or award) than to just make the claim.

2) This is a case where "show, don't tell" could have helped. If you think you're the best, why do you think that? Link to what you consider your finest work.

3) The ostensible goal of this particular blog could have been accomplished without being self-referential. We're all inspired by the work and innovations of others in our field. It would have been great to do a post about designers whose work he admires, or with whom he wishes he could work someday, etc.

With respect to a reaction, he could start with a mea culpa. And of course the best response at all is to do superb work and have happy clients. Even if one is "the best," there will always be haters.
