My notes
I love this movie so much that I was worried that rewatching it would make me love it less. I am pleased to say I was wrong. I know it's more fashionable to prefer The Nice Guys, but this is the film still holds my heart and I think RDJ and Val Kilmer have better chemistry than Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe (with no disrespect to any of them).
This film is a Swiss clock. Even the parts that seem like meanderings - such as Harry Lockhart being a bad narrator - offer clues. Each plot point is largely necessary. The clues are presented in ways that reward paying attention - though one particularly important clue will make you feel a little dirty. The dialogue is sharp, not for sharp's sake, but to actually show character growth (see the bit about adverbs).
I watched this instead of Die Hard as my Christmas movie this year and I regret nothing.
