My notes

Been a while since I watched this one, but recently picked up the Nolan Batman trilogy on UHD, so gave it a whirl.

It's wild watching this recontextualized with the MCU and the second (third?) attempt at starting the connected DC universe. It certainly eschews a lot of the comic book visual framing that Whedon really made a staple. And the quipping that Downey / Favreau really made a staple of the MCU are gone, leaving this a film that very much wants to sit in it's (often mopey and arch) feelings.

Conversely, the Joker teaser at the end really cemented the 'post credits, it's all connected' sense that the MCU really took and ran with three years later.

Sure, the points were a bit arch. And the attempt to make Batman 'realistic' while still making him Batman makes the film seem absurd when you stop to look at it, and really took me out of the film a lot. The decision to frequently shoot Batman as if he was the killer in a slasher film? That was great.

Overall, an entertaining film. Well constructed, though lacking some of Nolan's Nolan-ey later touches and probably 20 minutes too long and thanks to an irritating level of exposition.
