Kill Bill: Vol. 1
My notes
I first watched this during the war on a bootleg VCD - a format I that I don't this most people have experienced and a format that I don't think most people need to, but the thing that you should know is that VCD is 240p.
Jumping up to 4k was a welcome change. The film, visually, is characteristic Tarantino. Yes, down to the feet stuff.
Having not watched this film in more than two decades, and the first time approaching it in a resolution that I would consider humane, I enjoyed it. There's more than homage to the Shaw Brothers, and the fight with the Crazy 88s still remain a visual high point (though the egregious blood spurts makes me wonder about how long they would have lived had they not encountered the Bride).
One thing that did bother me was the a giveaway in the nonlinear nature of the film. I was a little dismayed when the Bride's notebook showed that she already had crossed off O'Ren Ishii's name prior to the opening fight with Vernita Green only then to build up to said fight with Ishii. Bit of a spoiler there.
Still, director's…quirks…aside, a fun, bloody, violent action film.
